“Turmeric and curcumin are the same thing, right?”
This is a question we receive daily. And it’s a very important question to address. Today we will talk about the relationship between turmeric and curcumin, and our favorite anti-inflammatory supplement line.
Turmeric is a spice. It has been eaten in India for generations. It has not been until relatively recently, though, that we have discovered its true health power: curcumin. The people of India have had the benefit of ingesting turmeric in foods multiple times per day, every day, for the entirety of their lives. This has given them protection from countless diseases and illnesses… all while they had no idea they were doing something so beneficial!
Curcumin is the part of turmeric responsible for its orange color. It is also the most beneficial part of the turmeric root, having anti-inflammatory and high antioxidant capacity. The troubling part is, curcumin makes up only 2-5% of the turmeric root! Getting an effective dose at those levels is the hard part.
Think of it this way… turmeric is the tree. Curcumin is the apple that grows on the tree. If you were looking for the health benefits of the sweet fruit, would you eat the tree, or would you pick the apple and eat it? The latter! Extracting the curcumin from the turmeric is the most effective way for us to receive ample health benefits when we start this late in the game. Some of us have been suffering from arthritis pain for years. We can’t reverse that by sprinkling a little bit of turmeric over our cereal in the morning.
Curcumin is difficult for the body to absorb. Many companies have attempted to create a superior absorption curcumin option. Black pepper blends, micronized, and liposomal blends have flooded the market in the appropriately deemed “Curcumin Wars.” Everyone believes they have the “best” form of curcumin, but as far as the studies go, and our customer feedback, one stands tall above the rest.
BCM-95 curmin extract blends a 95% curcumin extract with turmeric oil, which has shown to increase absorption up to 10 times in studies. We work very closely with the Terry Naturally brand to bring CuraMed and Curamin products to the shelf at a good price.
Curcumin could be the most studied natural substance on earth. With over 10,000 recorded studies, it has been shown to have benefits for:
· Alzheimer’s and Dementia
· Obesity and Diabetes
· Digestive problems
We would love for you to receive the powerful benefits of curcumin in your daily supplement regimen. Stop by the store for a free copy of Dr. Ajay Goel’s book Curcumin: Nature’s Answer to Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases.

Did you know your body makes cannabis-like compounds? Neither did I, until recently! The discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) was a major discovery in the early 90’s, but it has only come into the limelight in the last few years. The ECS is a series of receptors in the brain, central nervous system, and throughout the body that are activated by the presence of “agonists.” Think of the receptors as a lock and the agonists as a key. The agonists can be indigenous to the body in the form of endocannabinoids or from an external source, usually in form of phytocannabinoids from hemp or marijuana.
Although not completely understood to this point, it is known that we have two types of endocannabinoid receptors throughout the body, CB1 and CB2. To make something complex slightly simpler, think of CB1 receptors dealing with the nervous system and CB2 receptors dealing with the immune system.
The ECS is very important in the regulation of many bodily functions, including:
Endocannabinoids are made in the body with major help from Omega-3 fatty acids. This is only one reason why fish oil and flax oil are such important supplements. It is also not an accident that hemp and other cannabis plants are high in Omega Fatty Acids.
Historically, THC has been the most famous cannabinoid found in cannabis plants due to psychoactive results once ingested. Cannabis farmers had spent years trying to create the most psychoactive plants they could, taking the average THC content from 6-8% in the 1980’s to as high as 20% today! Recently, however, the power of CBD has come to the forefront, and we are learning just how powerful this major cannabinoid can be. CBD has the power to stop the psychoactive effects of THC while allowing the health benefits of cannabis ingestion. Some farmers have begun to product higher CBD containing marijuana crops, but agricultural hemp is already high in CBD with less than .3% THC! No hybridization needed.
The CBD movement started when the family of a young girl with Dravet Syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy, began to speak out about their experience. In 2013, a CNN special allowed millions of people to witness first-hand the power of CBD when it stopped one of the young girl’s seizures in its tracks. Since then, millions of people have experimented with CBD products for mood, stress, anxiety, pain, seizures, and many more ailments with amazing results.
CBD does not directly react with the CB1 or CB2 receptors like THC. CBD reacts with other movers and shakers of our ECS, allowing our body to produce our own endocannabinoids to stimulate our ECS. This means we have healing benefits without the high associated with traditional cannabis use.
It is my belief that CBD will be the next important supplement that stands the test of time. We see fads come and go. Hardly anyone remembers what Acai is anymore! CBD supplements will sit next to multi-vitamins and fish oil in importance in the supplement cabinet.
I would encourage everyone who would like to give CBD a try to start with a low dose and gradually increase until finding the dose that works for you. Unfortunately, with CBD, there is no one-size-fits all. If you are like me, you will respond to a very low dose (1-3 mg) very quickly. Others however, may have to work up to 15-20 mg before desired results are realized.
Be advised that every CBD we offer is from agricultural hemp (less than .3% THC) and perfectly legal for sale in Indiana.
I had the pleasure of traveling to Michigan City, IN this weekend to attend the Palko Tabletop Buying Show. What that means is I got to attend lectures and learn from industry experts and see innovative new products and see the latest research on time-honored remedies.
At Adele’s Naturally, we pride ourselves on two things: 1. Having high quality, safe, and effective products. 2. Knowing those products.
Taking part in these experiences is almost information overload! BUT, immersing oneself completely for a weekend in something one is passionate about is truly an experience that cannot be explained. I have worked in the natural products field for 12 years, since I was 15! I have a HUGE passion for this industry and these products and what they can do to change people’s health and lives.
I have attended 3 lectures now by Stuart Tomc, Vice-President of CV Sciences (see picture above). They are the makers of Plus CBD oil products. Cannabis has a long history in medicine, but has come under a lot of scrutiny in the last several years. Plus CBD uses industrial hemp to manufacture their products. There is no traceable amount of THC in any of their products, as they do not use marijuana in any product. The end result is thousands of people receiving the benefits of medical marijuana without the high or psychoactive effects. It is an incredible line and we are proud to have their products of the shelf. Stuart is one of the highest energy, healthiest people I’ve ever met. He has spent time at North American Herb & Spice and Nordic Naturals, and is very respected in the field.
With the growing research on the effectiveness of CBD products, we are expanding our selections of Plus CBD on the shelf. I would encourage you to give them a try, even at a low dose. People are experiencing less pain, less stress and anxiety, clearer minds, more regular elimination cycles, and hundreds of other benefits. The cannabis plant seems to be the most synergistic plant to human health ever known, and hemp is a much more viable option for the common individual than its psychoactive cousin, marijuana.
I was able to learn much more about probiotics and how to choose the right one for your situation. Many of us focus way too much on acidophilus, which is indigenous to the human body. Our bodies already have trillions of cultures of acidophilus. To get more benefit from your supplemental probiotic, focus on other strains in your blend. I became particularly fascinated with lactobacillus bulgaricus. This little strain was discovered in Bulgaria (hence the name) and, in perfect conditions, can double its colony size every 20 minutes. Obviously, our intestinal tracts are usually not optimal conditions, but you can see the potential for fast replication!
I am still digesting a processing a lot of the new information, but I am back at the store and as energized as ever to bring natural health to the Evansville area.

February is Heart Month. There is no better time to talk about the importance of the heart than Heart Month!
When we talk about the heart, we are talking about something almost sacred. You have heard the term “the heart of something.” It means the innermost part of something. The life force of something. Without a heart, we cannot be. Shouldn’t it be something we cherish and try to keep as healthy as possible?
With heart health, most people will think of blood pressure, blood flow, and cholesterol. These are perfect places to start. Too high blood pressure can cause a myriad of health issues for an individual. Lack of blood flow can cause numbness, soreness, and even embarrassing situations. Oxidized cholesterol is one of the biggest health issues we face today in America. The build-up of plaque on arterial walls can cause blockages and can even lead to heart attack!
So what can we do to take care of our heart?
We all know the importance of diet and exercise. Cutting out refined carbohydrates (soda, bread, white pasta) is the best thing you can do to keep your heart healthy and your blood flowing freely. Staying active will keep your heart in good shape by training it like the muscle it is.
Several supplements can be of benefit as well.
Omega-3 fatty acids have long been looked to for aiding in keeping a healthy ticker. The American Heart Association recommends ingesting no less than 500 mg of combined EPA and DHA (two fatty acids in Omega-3) per day. We recommend ingesting much higher than this amount, but it is a great place to start!
Mayo Clinic states that “Omega-3 fatty acids may decrease triglycerides, lower blood pressure slightly, reduce blood clotting, decrease stroke and heart failure risk and reduce irregular heartbeats.”
The two main sources of Omega-3 fatty acids are fish oil and flax oil. Fish oil is often chosen due to the fish already converting the Omega-3 into the ready-to-use acids EPA and DHA. Flax oil is a great vegan option, but higher levels are required due to the body having to make its own EPA and DHA from the flax-form ALA acids.
Be careful which fish oil you purchase. Most brands have already gone rancid by the time you ingest them. Look for a good “triglyceride form” fish oil rather than “ethyl ester form” fish oil. Ethyl esters are unstable and are more prone to oxidation. Most complaints of fishy after-taste and belching are from ethyl ester fish oils.
Also, be sure the amount of EPA and DHA is clearly stated on the nutrition label. If it is not readily available on the bottle, skip it for another product. We HIGHLY recommend Nordic Naturals fish oils over other brands.
CoQ10 is a natural antioxidant required for every cell in your body to produce energy. Without it, cells cannot replicate or survive. It is found in much higher doses in organs that require more energy, such as the heart.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil “Coenzyme Q10 is beneficial for heart health in many ways. It assists in maintaining the normal oxidative state of LDL cholesterol, helps assure circulatory health, and supports optimal functioning of the heart muscle. CoQ10 may also help support the health of vessel walls.”
CoQ10 deficiency has been associated with many cardiovascular problems including angina, arrhythmia, heart failure and high blood pressure . Individuals who take statin cholesterol lowering drugs are at particular risk for CoQ10 deficiency. Many side effects, such as achy joints and muscle pain can be attributed to the lack of CoQ10.
CoQ10 can be found in two forms, ubiquinol (it’s active form) and ubiquinone (the oxidized form). Ubiquinone is more common and more affordable, but the ubiquinol form is a more active antioxidant in the body.
More recent studies have found many benefits to the active component of the little orange spice, turmeric. Curcumin has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant punch that cannot be rivaled by many other supplements.
Studies have shown curcumin to benefit blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This spice isn’t just for joint pain anymore.
With new studies coming out all the time, curcumin could become the next heart healthy powerhouse supplement.
We recommend BCM-95 curcumin from Terry Naturally as it is extremely bioavailable and stays active in the body up to 4 times as long as other turmeric or curcumin supplements.
During February, we are offering 14% off all Nordic Naturals fish oil supplements, a Buy One Get One on Natural Factors 100 mg CoQ10, and our usual 20% off all original CuraMed products. This is the perfect time to make your heart a priority.
In good health,

Taking on the market of sports nutrition was something we wanted to take on for 2017. We attempted a small sports nutrition section years ago, but were not able to find the right products to fit our clientele.
Sports “nutrition” products are known for having massive amount of caffeine, artificial colors & sweeteners, and a host of other ingredients that are just plain awful to put in the body. We do not allow these ingredients in any products that hit our shelves. Luckily, several of our favorite brands creating “clean” sports nutrition products. Meaning, pre- and post-workout supplements without the use of artificial ingredients and without the overuse of caffeine. Plus, the caffeine being used is a natural source. THAT is something we can get behind.
Garden of Life has long been one of our favorite companies. In the first quarter of this year, GOL released a sports performance line featuring a plant-based pre-workout formula, a plant-based recovery formula, protein bars, and two different protein powders, one whey and one plant-based. All except the whey protein are certified organic. They whey protein is from certified grass-fed cows. It is certainly one of the cleanest lines on the market, and it is now available in our store. We are proud of that.
As the year progresses, look for us to expand our offerings
in our sports nutrition section. In the mean time, know you can find the safest
and most effective products on our shelves!

As providers of natural supplements, we see multiple individuals make “New Year’s Resolutions” every year. It could be something simple like taking a multiple vitamin every day or limiting soda to one drink per day. Often, it will be something bigger, such as buying a membership to a fitness club or cutting out sugar altogether. If we were to ask these individuals in June if they are still practicing their new “habits,” the answer is never quite what they expect when they begin their journey in January.
A new year brings a chance at a fresh start. One cycle is done and another begins. 2017 takes that cycle one step further. In numerology, cycles happen in 9’s. 2016 (2+0+1+6=9) is the ending of a cycle. The close of 2016 brings the beginning of a Universal One year. 2+0+1+7=10=1+0= 1
If there is ever a time to let go of the past and bring in a new frame of mind, it is now. Forgive your trespassers and leave your baggage with the ending cycle.
You may have heard someone tell you “Don’t set a New Year’s Resolution, make a lifestyle change!” But I believe a New Year’s Resolution can LEAD to a lifestyle change. It takes a minimum of 21 days to form a habit. Can you actively pursue a goal for 21 days? OF COURSE you can! Decide right now to make that change.
Let’s look back at our multiple vitamin example. If you could set an alarm on your smartphone to take your vitamin every morning, and stuck to it for a month, it would be like second nature. It becomes part of your routine. Think of the health benefits a small change like that could make for you!
So what can you leave behind in 2016? What changes can you make for a better 2017 and going forward? How can we help you on your journey… naturally?
2016 is a celebration for us. The great city of Evansville has supported us for 4 decades, and in that time, it has been our privilege to provide our customers with only the most researched, efficacious, and SAFE natural supplements available.
It has been a year of significance. We enjoyed a week-long party in May as our anniversary and our founder, Adele Cottrell’s, 101st birthday coincided. In November, we mourned as we suffered her loss.
Over 40 years, many things change. New research becomes available. In our dedication to providing safe and effective products, we must constantly change as well. New products hit our shelves this year because of this. We do our best to not buy into hype and just sell the “hot” products of the moment. Our staff studies products, both new and old, to make sure we can help our customers select the right supplement regimen to support them on their journey… naturally.
A brand new website is new territory for us. We are excited to learn this outlet to provide better service to our customers. There is a lot to know when you have a store full of 3000 individual small bottles, boxes of tea, essential oils, and personal care items. This blog will be one way for our staff to share the knowledge we have been blessed to accumulate over the last 40 years.
